AI competitor analysis

See who AI recommends instead of you

Ask ChatGPT what to buy and it names three or four brands. If you're not one of them, a competitor is. Track the questions your buyers ask on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and see which competitors get named in your place, how often, and on which questions and engines you lose.

01 · Share of answers

Every rival's share of the answers, next to yours

Add the competitors you care about. Each one gets a card with how many answers named it, what share of answers that is, and the tone AI used about it. Yours sits beside them, so you can see at a glance who AI names more often than you.

  • Built from the latest answer to each question on each engine, not an old average
  • A short trend line for each brand, so you can see who's gaining
  • Open any rival for its own page: question by question, engine by engine, and what AI said about it

The questions a competitor wins and you don't

One list of every question where AI named a competitor and left you out, with who it named, on which engines, and how many checks that happened in. Open the row to read the answer itself.

  • “Recurring gap” marks a question lost in four or more checks, so one bad answer doesn't send you chasing
  • Sorted so the questions you lose most often come first
  • Each engine shown separately: losing on Perplexity and winning on ChatGPT needs a different fix from losing everywhere

AI share of voice and more

Everything the competitor view shows you

All of it comes from the real answers to the questions you track. Nothing is estimated from search volume or guessed from your website.

1

Share of voice

Of every time AI named a brand you track, the percentage that was you. The split adds up to 100%, so it's a real comparison, not separate rates. How it's measured

2

Recommendation share

The same split, counting only the times AI recommended a brand or called it the top pick. Being mentioned and being recommended are not the same thing.

3

Where a rival is ahead

For the competitor AI names most, the ways it's ahead of you: named more often, recommended more often, placed higher in the answer, cited by sites that don't cite you. Only gaps that exist are listed.

4

Engine by question

A grid of how often each engine names you for each question, so you can tell a one-engine problem from an everywhere problem.

5

Why AI picks them

On each competitor's page, phrases quoted from the answers that named them instead of you. That's the reason in the engine's own words.

6

Rivals you didn't know about

Brands that keep turning up in your answers but that you don't track yet. Add one in a click while your plan has room.

How it works

Set it up once. The answers keep coming.

No script to install, no access to your site, nothing for your developers to do.

1

Add the questions buyers ask

The way a buyer would ask AI: “best waterproof hiking boots”, “family lawyer near Leeds”, “CRM for a five-person team”.

2

Add your competitors

Type their names, or pick from the brands AI has already named in your answers.

3

Watch who gets named

Each question is asked on each engine your plan includes, again and again over time. Every new answer updates the comparison.

Found a gap? Here's what to do with it. AI names a competitor because something it read told it to: a review, a roundup, a forum thread, the competitor's own page. On Pro & Agency, each gap turns into a task: what to publish or where to get mentioned, the question it should win, and why AI picked the competitor. Pro & Agency

Good to know

What the numbers can and can't tell you

Competitors are matched by name. If AI writes a competitor's name differently from the way you entered it, that answer isn't counted for them. After you add a competitor you're told how many recent answers name it; if the answer is none, check how AI spells it.

Names that are ordinary words get over-counted. A brand called “On” or “Close” matches the everyday word too. For those, open the answers and check before you act on the numbers.

Answers change. AI doesn't give the same answer every time, so one lost check means little. That's why gaps show how many checks they're based on, and why recurring gaps are marked.

What is AI competitor analysis?

It means checking which brands AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name when a buyer asks what to buy, and comparing that with how often they name you. Done properly, it is question by question and engine by engine, because each engine writes its own shortlist and a single average hides where you lose.

How do I find out who ChatGPT recommends instead of me?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, in a private window, and write down every brand it names. To do it across several questions and engines, and keep doing it as the answers change, add your questions and competitors to CitedOrNot. Every answer then records whether you were named and which competitors were.

What is AI share of voice?

Of every time AI named any brand you track (you or a competitor) in your answers, the percentage that was you. CitedOrNot also shows recommendation share: the same split, counting only the times AI actually recommended a brand or called it the top pick, not just mentioned it.

Can I see competitor visibility in ChatGPT on its own?

Yes. Each engine is checked and shown separately, so you can see how often ChatGPT names each competitor and on which questions, apart from the other engines. ChatGPT is on every plan, the free trial included.

How many competitors can I track?

Free trial 1, Starter 2, Pro 5, Agency 10 per brand. The free test compares one.

What if I don't know who my competitors are in AI answers?

You don't need to. CitedOrNot lists the brands that appear in your AI answers that you aren't tracking yet, and you can add them with one click while you have room on your plan. Often the brands AI names are not the ones you think of as rivals.

Does this work if I don't sell software?

Yes. It works for any brand a buyer might ask AI about: a clothing label, a restaurant, a law firm, a consultant or a software product. You choose the questions and the competitors.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. The free test asks ChatGPT and Gemini a real buyer question about your brand and compares you with one competitor, with no account needed. The 7-day free trial lets you track your own questions and competitors.
